Unit IV Summary: Filtration and Centrifugation

This unit covers two essential mechanical separation processes in pharmaceutical engineering: filtration and centrifugation.

Filtration is a key process used to separate solids from liquids or gases. The unit explains its objectives, applications, and theoretical background, including factors that influence the filtration process, such as pressure, particle size, viscosity, and filter media properties. The use of filter aids and various filter media is also discussed. Several filtration systems are detailed, including the plate and frame filter, filter leaf, rotary drum filter, meta filter, cartridge filter, membrane filters, and Seidtz filter. For each, the principles, construction, working, advantages, and disadvantages are covered.

Centrifugation is introduced as a technique for separating substances based on density differences under high-speed rotation. The unit highlights its objectives, working principles, and applications in pharmaceutical operations. Various centrifuges are explored, including the perforated basket centrifuge, non-perforated basket centrifuge, semi-continuous centrifuge, and super centrifuge, each discussed in terms of principle, design, working, uses, benefits, and limitations.

At FirstHope, we provide BPharm notes that are topic-wise, easy to understand, and designed strictly as per the AKTU and Other Universities, hence designed according to PCI syllabus.
