Unit III Summary: Fungi, Viruses, Disinfection, and Sterility Testing
This unit explores the morphology, classification, reproduction, and cultivation of both fungi and viruses, offering foundational knowledge essential for understanding microbial behavior and pathogenicity. It describes the methods used to replicate and grow fungi and viruses, which differ significantly from bacterial cultivation due to their unique structural and metabolic characteristics.
The unit also covers the classification and mode of action of disinfectants, explaining how different chemical agents inhibit or kill microorganisms. Key factors influencing disinfection, such as concentration, contact time, and environmental conditions, are discussed along with a comparison between disinfectants and antiseptics.
A detailed study of bacteriostatic and bactericidal actions is included, focusing on the evaluation methods used to distinguish between microbial inhibition and microbial killing.
Lastly, the unit addresses sterility testing of pharmaceutical products, including solids, liquids, ophthalmic, and other sterile forms, based on the official guidelines provided by IP (Indian Pharmacopoeia), BP (British Pharmacopoeia), and USP (United States Pharmacopeia).
At FirstHope, we provide BPharm notes that are topic-wise, easy to understand, and designed strictly as per the AKTU and Other Universities, hence designed according to PCI syllabus.
