Unit IV: Parenteral Products and Ophthalmic Preparations – BPharma Notes Summary

This unit explains the basics and preparation methods of parenteral products and ophthalmic formulations, which are essential dosage forms in modern pharmacy.

Parenteral Products

Parenteral products are sterile preparations injected directly into the body. This section begins with the definition, types, and their advantages and limitations. It also covers important preformulation factors, the role of vehicles and additives, and the importance of isotonicity for patient safety.

Moving on, the production procedure, facility requirements, and aseptic processing techniques are explained in detail. The unit also includes the formulation of injections, sterile powders, large volume parenterals, and lyophilized products.

Further, it highlights the selection of containers and closures, such as ampoules, vials, and infusion bottles, along with the filling and sealing process. In addition, quality control tests ensure the safety, sterility, and stability of these products.

Ophthalmic Preparations

The unit also covers eye drops, ointments, and lotions, discussing their formulation, preparation methods, labeling, containers, and evaluation tests
